Role-playing
Role-playing is the act of assuming the identity of a
fictional character and behaving accordingly. It
involves getting to know this persona in a very real and deep
way. Much the way a good actor will assume the mental
and physical traits of part, a good role-player tries to
"become" the character they have created. Sometimes,
this means playing characters that are very different than you
are, characters who wield magic and go out into the world and
fight evil. And, sometimes, the character is indeed
evil.
Which brings me to the hallmark of good role-playing:
accepting consequences. Whatever kind of character you
choose to play, whether good or evil, lazy or industrious,
studious or dumb, you, as the player must follow the path that
the character essentially chooses, for good or ill. This
requires a great deal of maturity.
